Right now I’m using Jan’s laptop, so all the pictures I want to post are not on the laptop that I’m using to update my lovely blog!! So let me just give you a funny bit of history of Edinburgh Scotland. There’s a phrase that we still use to describe someone who was very drunk that was created there. Remember those buckets that people used to use back in the day to use as.. well.. their toilets? Well, to dispose of such waste they would throw the “water” out of their windows into the streets below. Before throwing the waste from the window, they would warn the people below by yelling “Gaurde Loo!!” which is French for “watch the water”. Then, if there were people below they could tell them not to throw the water by holding their hand up and yelling back, “hold your hand!!”
Now there were two legal times that the citizens of Edinburgh could throw away their waste in the streets: at 7am and 10pm. Well, the bars in Edinbourgh would close down at 9:45, and all the drunk people would stumble out into the dark streets trying to navigate their way home. For the unlucky souls who lived more than 15 minutes away from the bar they drank at, they had to watch out because at 10pm, the people of Edinburgh would exclaim, “Gaurde Loo!” and if they were too drunk to respond they would get a face full of nasty! Thus the phrase “SHIT FACED” was born!!!
Once we figure out a way to get my computer onto the internet here in Flensburg, Germany, I’ll post some pictures!
